Kadry on Bowling: Nine from Modesto honored on NorCal YBA All Star team

Modesto has produced some great youth bowlers, and this year is no exception.

Nine locals have earned a spot on the 2015 NorCal YBA All Star team.

In the Major division (ages 16-21), Matt Peters, 18, and Brittany and Brianna Scheaffer, both 19, secured a spot. Peters averaged 217 this past season and recorded a 300 game and 803 series. Brittany Scheaffer posted a 288 game and 726 series with an average of 207. Brianna Scheaffer rolled a 300 game, 720 series and posted a 201 average.

Vivian Serrano,15, and Roman Heath,13, earned a spot in the Junior division (ages 13-15). Heath booked a 213 average with a high game of 300 and a 795 series. Serrano averaged a 172 and posted a 254 game and 608 series.

In the Prep division (ages 10-12), Ashton Russell and Sara Nassberg, both 12, earned honors. Russell carried a 189 average and rolled a 247 game and 682 series. Nassberg’s high average was 179, and she held a high game of 267 and a 610 series.

Joe Irvin and Nickolas Serrano were named to the Bantam team (9 and younger). Irvin, 9, averaged 162. He posted a high game of 226 and a 606 series. Serrano, 9, rolled a high game of 204 and a 469 series. His season average was 138.

The team members will be honored at the annual All Star Banquet at the Silver Legacy in Reno on Aug. 15. ...

Lydia Sparks was the high overall in Yosemite’s 50 and Over Tournament and placed first on the women’s prize list with a 972. Pat Kirschman was second with a 912 set, followed by Betty Gerritsen with an 889 total. Bob Heller and Greg Ereso shared the lead on the men’s side with a score of 863. Elvin Ghan was next, scoring 860. ...

Both bowling centers are open Saturday for family fun. At McHenry, bowling is $5 for two games, including shoes, from 9 a.m. until after midnight. Yosemite will offer holiday rates. Call to hold a lane at McHenry (209-571-2695) and Yosemite (209-524-9161). ...

The fireworks booth in the McHenry parking lot is open through Saturday evening. All proceeds go to the youth bowling program. Bowlers receive a 10 percent discount on any purchase. ...

On Monday morning, the Ladies Trio Team Tournament competes at McHenry at 9:30 a.m. Check-in is 9 a.m. ...

The annual open meeting for the Modesto USBC is July 19 at Yosemite at 11 a.m. ...

This is the last weekend for Bonus Day money in the Peach Classic. Squads are at noon, 2:30 and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The five-game handicap tournament runs every weekend at McHenry through Aug. 3. First place pays a guaranteed $2,500, and the total prize fund is estimated to exceed $30,000. Ladies, if you are a scratch bowler, it’s time to step up and support the first Modesto USBC Queens Tournament July 18-19 at Yosemite.
