Golf analyst, humorist David Feherty to perform at Modesto’s Gallo Center for the Arts

If you play golf or, more directly, watch golf or the Golf Channel, you have seen and heard David Feherty.

And probably laughed.

You can see and hear him in Modesto on Thursday night at the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto.

Once described as “a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Johnny Carson,” by the New York Times, Feherty is most recently known for his former Golf Channel show, “Feherty,” and his work as an analyst, most recently for NBC’s coverage of the Ryder Cup.

A former PGA Tour player, the Northern Ireland native debuted professionally in 1976 and played most of his career on the European Tour, where he won five events and represented Europe in the 1991 Ryder Cup.

Interestingly, he’s a co-announcer on EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour series with Jim Nantz .

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette once wrote: “David Feherty was uproariously funny. It was two hours of zaniness and madcap storytelling. People were coming out of their seats with laughter.”

But, he’s also known for his takes. In Forbes Magazine this summer, he said The Open Championship is No. 1 among all tournaments, ahead of The Masters and the U.S. Open.

“Well, The Masters is special—it’s not a championship but it’s a tournament and it’s a limited field, invite only,” he told Forbes contributor Adam Frye. “Whereas the British Open, you can qualify—anyone can—provided you have a low enough handicap.

“The Open is the oldest of them all and has the most tradition, and it was always my favorite event to play in. Plus, it’s the most international of them all as you have players from all over the world going just to compete there.

“I think that’s what sets it apart, with the story of it, going back to 1860 and the first ones being played at Prestwick. It’s both like a royal and an ancient golf tournament.

“There’s no question about that. You win this one and and it sets you up as a competitor for life. ...”

Tickets range from $50 to $69.
