Nuts trio assists in All-Star Game victory
Three Modesto Nuts players combined for four hits and boosted the California League All-Stars to a 9-2 victory over the Carolina League All-Stars on Tuesday night.
Ryan McMahon, the starting third baseman, went 2 for 4 and scored twice for the Cal League, which led most of the game. Patterson, the starter in right field, was 1 for 4 and scored once. Raimel Tapia, a late injury replacement two days before the game, was 1 for 2 and scored once. Pitcher Antonio Senzatela attended the game but didn’t play because of an injury.
A crowd of 4,702 watched the Cal League pull away with one run in the second inning, two in the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth. Rancho Cucamonga infielder Brandon Trinkwon pleased the home fans by being named the game’s MVP. He went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Cody Bellinger, Trinkwon’s Rancho Cucamonga teammate, delivered a run-scoring double in the third and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. High Desert Mavericks catcher Alex Burg was 2 for 2 with a walk. The Cal League outhit the visitors 13-10.
Modesto, 33-37 over the season’s first half, hopes to improve in the final 70 games. The Nuts open the second half Thursday night with the first of four games at San Jose. They return to Thurman Field for a four-game series against Bakersfield on Tuesday night. The series will climax with fireworks July 3.
Water polo teams advance to Junior Olympics
Three Modesto-Stanislaus boys water polo teams – 14-under, 16-under and 18-under – have qualified for the Junior Olympics National Championships.
Those teams advanced at the Central California Water Polo Zone qualifying. Their reward is a trip to the nationals in Newport Beach from July 25-28.
Junior Olympics qualifying for the Modesto-Stanislaus girls teams takes place in tournament competition Saturday and Sunday at Johansen, Downey, Enochs, Oakdale and Pitman high schools. The locals are entered in 12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 18-under divisions.
River Oaks’ second junior golf session to begin
The second of two River Oaks junior golf sessions is scheduled from July 14 through Aug. 5. The cost is $30 for 5- to 7-year-olds, $65 for intermediates and $85 for advanced. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays.
Each class will last one hour and will be limited to the first 12 students. River Oaks will not turn away any child due to monetary reasons. Call (209) 537-4653.
