Kadry on Bowling: Roseville’s Haggerty big winner at Yosemite Lanes

PJ Haggerty, bowling out of Roseville, claimed the title in the 10th annual PBA Vanessa Brown Homes West Open last weekend at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto.

Haggerty qualified high on Saturday with a 1,999 total to make the cut to 16 for Sunday’s final rounds. Locals making the cut were Myles Duty, third at 1,946; Will Garber, fourth at 1,926; Freddy Irvin, 12th at 1,826; and Wayne Garber, 14th at 1,814.

Haggerty led the field through the single-elimination finals. In the last match, he defeated Dennis Horan Jr. of Oakley 236-225. Haggerty won $2,000, and Horan won $1,200.Will Garber made $900 for third. Duty collected $650 finishing fifth, and Irvin (ninth) and Wayne Garber (16th) each made $500. ...

Running with the tournament was the PBA50 Vanessa Brown Homes. The PBA50 tour is limited to bowlers over age 50. Warren Nelson of Plummer, Idaho, won the inaugural tournament and took home $1,500. Just making the cut into the finals was Jim Gordin at 16th with a 1,734. After the finals, he finished in 12th and took home $500. Brian Voss, a national pro, showed up and placed fourth for $800. ...

The team of Betty Gerritsen, Heide Erler and Dave Castro topped the field in the Mixed Kegler Trios at Modesto’s McHenry Bowl with a 2,509 total. John Garcia, Bud Thompson and Jay Faughn finished second, tallying 2,460. Garcia included a no-tap 300 in his contribution. Dave Moren, Thomas Teague and Rick Ealy rounded out the top three with a 2,454 total. ...

This Friday, the Yosemite 50 and older No-Tap tournament runs at 1 p.m. Check-in is at 12:30. ...

The Junior/Senior Firecracker Doubles at McHenry is on the calendar for July 3 at 1 p.m. Doubles teams are made up of one youth (age 18 and under) and one adult (55 and over). No averages are needed to bowl. If you are a senior or junior and don’t have a partner, you can be matched with someone. Entry includes a barbeque lunch, cash place money for the seniors, scholarships for the youth and lots of prizes. Lunch starts at noon, and tournament check-in is at 12:30. The 66th annual Peach Classic is halfway through its 2015 run this weekend and has squads at noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a Bonus Day weekend and will pay an extra $100 to the high score for the day and $50 to second highest. Call McHenry to reserve your time at (209) 571-2695. ...

The Modesto USBC is presenting its first Queens Tournament next month. The tournament will be held at Yosemite with qualifying July 18 at 2:30 p.m. and the finals July 19. Entries are at the bowl desks. ...

If you want to improve your game and want professional help, consider signing up for the Chris Barnes/Mark Baker Clinic at Yosemite. This year’s class will be on Sept. 12-13. The fee for the two-day class is $350, which includes on-lane instruction, classroom time and a personal instructional manual. The first day will include the physical game and lane play discussions by Baker and Barnes. The second day will include PBA patterns, equipment discussions and personalized lessons by Baker and Barnes.
