Modesto’s Yosemite Lanes to host PBA Western Regional
The 10th Annual Vanessa Brown Homes PBA Western Regional is running this weekend at Modesto’s Yosemite Lanes.
In conjunction with the regional, they are holding a no-tap on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and one on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Entry fees are $25 for the senior division; $40 for the adult division and $20 for the junior division. There is guaranteed money for all of the pro-am winners.
This year, the program will feature PBA members Michael Haugen Jr., Chris Warren, Scott Norton, and Josh Blanchard, all of whom have PBA titles to their credit. The PBA50 Tour just finished up at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood, and some top-name players from that tournament could show in Modesto.
To celebrate the 10th year of hosting the regional, Yosemite Lanes is having a barbecue on Saturday at 6 p.m. for $5. The tourney has a special-ball program, with entry and drilling included with the purchase of a Columbia or Ebonite.
Call Yosemite Lanes at (209) 524-9161 to reserve a spot and ask for Jim or Wayne.
Peach Classic
A few scores from the 66th Annual Peach Classic has Brandon Bates of Modesto leading the men’s division with a 1,220. In the women’s division, Modesto’s Bonnie Garber leads with a 1,188. Fresno’s Jason Tehee (300) had the men’s high game. Garber had a 277. Our women’s 500 club secretary, Julie Egleston, rolled a 231 and is in fifth place. First place this year is a guaranteed $2,500.
They offer many options during the tournament for both men and women. The entry fee is $60, and entry forms are available at Bellevue Bowl in Atwater, and have all the options listed at the Peach. The estimated prize fund could run as high as $30,000 this year. To reserve a spot, contact McHenry Bowl at (209) 571-2695. If you place 100th in the Peach, you are guaranteed $100.
Any DoublesWill Do
A couple of local members placed in the money in the Any Doubles Will Do senior no-tap at Modesto’s McHenry Bowl. Doubles teams consisted of two men, two women, or mixed. Keith Hunter placed in the men’s high game pot. Kim Heller placed in the women’s high game pot and also hooked up with yours truly to finish in sixth place in team series. Earl Purcell and Teeny Allen took first place as Purcell rolled two 300 games, and they split $100. Purcell also won cash for taking the high game pots.
Scratch trio
The league welcomed back Ronnie Gonzales, who underwent surgery a few months ago, and he showed no signs of being off as he rolled a 236/568. On Sunday in the Three on a Team tournament, his first game was a 273. Rolling on the PBA Wolf pattern, which is only 32 feet, Sean McCulloch rolled 217, Miranda Lewis 188/209, Joe McBride 234, Justin Decker 203, and Robert Chaney 204.
Weber wins Open
Hall of Famer Pete Weber won the first Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open on June 5 in Las Vegas. He joins Hall of Famer Norm Duke as the only players to win U.S Open titles in the PBA and on the PBA50 Tour. Weber defeated top-seeded Eric Forkel 224-212 in the title match. Weber owns 37 PBA Tour titles, including a record 10 majors. In the semifinal match, Weber beat Duke 247-190. Weber was the fourth qualifier and defeated the No. 3 qualifier, Chris Warren, 224-202.
Former Giants pitcher John Burkett, who is a rookie on the tour, finished 15th in his first PBA50 tournament for $2,000. Former Atwater resident Ty Dawson placed 32nd for $1,250, and Yosemite Lanes owner Jim Gordin placed 37th for $1,160. It looks like Gordin is trying all the PBA50 Tour tournaments in California. Weber received $12,000, Forkel $7.000, Duke $5,000 and Warren $4,000.
