Notebook: Big Valley, Turlock seniors compete in baseball showcase

Big Valley Christian senior Cameron Butler and Turlock senior Dominic Rodriguez both competed at the 2020 Area Code Games showcase baseball tournament in Atlanta, Georgia.

The event was from Aug. 7-10 and scouts from all 30 MLB teams as well as NCAA coaches were in attendance.

Butler and Rodriguez were on the Oakland Athletics team, which went 0-2-2. Butler scored two runs and Rodriguez had two hits and threw one scoreless inning in the tournament.

Central Valley alum signs with UC Merced: UC Merced women’s basketball head coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery announced the Bobcats’ 2020-21 recruiting class earlier this week and it included a former Central Valley High guard.

Mikayla Mabie, who averaged 12.2 points and 10.1 assists as a senior in 2016, is one of the seven incoming players.

After graduating CV, she spent two years at Fresno City College, averaging 10 points, six assists, and two steals per game in two years. She was a two-time All-Central Valley First Team selection and earned second team all-state her freshman year and third team all-state her sophomore year.

Stan State’s Adams nominated for major award: Sierra Adams, who had 691 career kills and 133 blocks in three years on the Stanislaus State women’s volleyball team, is one of 60 college athletes who have been named conference-level nominees for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The nominees come from 21 sports from all three NCAA divisions.

The selection committee will choose 30 honorees, 10 from each division, and announce them in September. They will then cut the field to nine, three from each division, before announcing the winner later in the fall.
