Local Digest: Stanislaus State announces women’s volleyball signees for next season
Led by two local athletes, the Stanislaus State women’s volleyball team announced its six signees on Monday.
Lauren Braga (Ripon Christian) and Kailee Whorton (Oakdale) both signed and were joined by Haley Burdo (Cosumnes Oaks HS), Alexa Byrd (Lincoln HS), Angela Lambert (Delta College), and Ellison Weaver (Union HS in Roosevelt, Utah).
“We are incredibly excited about our 2020 recruiting class,” said Warriors coach Mallori Gibson-Rossi said. “Not only is this a very talented group of young ladies, but they are all so eager and hungry to put in the hard work it takes to be successful at the highest level.
““They are driven in the classroom as well, and will continue on the tradition of being an elite student-athlete at Stan State.”
Braga was a defensive specialist for the Knights, who won the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title in 2019.
“Lauren attended camp last summer and we immediately fell in love with her work ethic,” Gibson-Rossi said. “I believe Lauren will develop quickly as she surrounds herself with other high-level volleyball players.”
Whorton had 450 digs in her last two years with the Mustangs.
“Kailee’s ability to serve, pass and defend will make her a strong addition to the court,” Gibson-Rossi said. “She reads extremely well and is very competitive.”
