With Opening Day postponed, Modesto Nuts to host 5K fundraiser race this weekend

Friday night was supposed to be the Modesto Nuts’ home opener against the Lancaster Jethawks.

However, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the start of the Minor League Baseball season has been delayed.

With no baseball this weekend, the Nuts have partnered with Brenda Athletic Clubs to create the “Cashew Later Charity 5K” with proceeds from the “virtual” race going to families in need due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is a virtual run, with participants running on their own and sharing their time on social media.

“It is our duty as a community venue to do all we can to help those in need,” Nuts General Manager Zach Brockman said. “Fitness and fundraising are synonymous with baseball so why not have a fun active community event that everyone can participate in while still following social distancing standards.”

The Nuts are encouraging fans to remain 6 feet apart while running; racers will able to share their run times via social media.

The top runners will receive gifts from the Nuts and Brenda Athletic Clubs.

Fans can register for the race online and then run a 5K at any point this weekend and then post a screenshot on social media with the hashtag, #NutsAboutFitness.

The team is asking for donations to Love Our Neighbors but a donation isn’t required to run the race.
