Kadry on Bowling: Paid positions open in Modesto USBC

The Modesto USBC has opened the application process for three paid positions in the association.

Applications are available at the bowl desks for the positions of association manager, treasurer and website facilitator and will be accepted until June 19. Completed forms are to be returned to either bowling center in a sealed envelope with Association Employment Application written on the front. After the application process, eligible candidates will be scheduled for interviews. The board plans to review and hire for the positions at its July meeting. ...

The USBC has made significant changes in its rules for local leagues to run a sport shot program to encourage more bowlers and leagues to take advantage of competing on more challenging lane conditions. The sport bowling program started with the 2000-01 season in response to technology changes in the sport. With the advances in bowling ball technology and oil dressing techniques, averages and high scoring escalated to unheard-of numbers.

Sport bowling goes back to emphasizing the bowler’s ability to consistently make accurate shots and know when to make necessary adjustments.

Most major USBC events, the PBA Tour, PWBA Tour and World Bowling events use the sport shot. Leagues choosing to compete on sport lane patterns now will have the opportunity to report as a sport/challenge league. They will not have to submit lane tapes before each week’s bowling or require bowlers to purchase membership upgrades as in the past.

Because sport bowling conditions are more challenging than typical league conditions, a bowler usually averages much lower on sport conditions. The USBC provides an average adjustment chart for bowlers who carry a sport shot average to use when bowling in tournaments or other non-sport shot leagues or events. ...

This Sunday is the Scratch 6-gamer Tournament at Yosemite Lanes with an optional side win-a-spot for an entry into the Vanessa Brown PBA West Region tour stop from June 19-21. Entry fee for the 6-gamer is $60, and there will be brackets, high and last game side pots and senior insurance available. The cost for the win-a-spot is an additional $40 for a chance to win a $285 tournament spot. The oil pattern will be the PBA Cheetah for the 6-gamer and tour stop. Check-in is 11 a.m. with tournament scoring starting at noon. ...

Two tournaments are set for this Friday. In the morning, the Ladies No-tap Trio Luncheon Sweeper bowls at 9:30 a.m. at Yosemite. At 1 p.m. at McHenry Bowl, the Any Doubles Will Do No-tap Singles will compete. Doubles teams can be any combination of men and women. Check-in for both is a half-hour before the start. ...

The 66th annual Peach Classic has four bonus-day weekends remaining. Bonus days pay an extra $100 to the high score for the day and $50 to second high. The singles handicap tournament runs weekends through Aug. 2 with squads at noon, 2:30 and 5 p.m. Entry fee is $60 per person and includes all prize lists. The Modesto USBC inaugural Modesto Queens Tournament is on the calendar for July 18-19 at Yosemite. Qualifying will be held July 18 at 2:30 p.m. The top bowlers will return July 19 at 9 a.m. to roll the double-elimination, two-game final matches. Entry fee is $125 per person.
