Local Digest: Turlock soccer team one win away from qualifying for US Open Cup

Academica SC will host International Portland Select FC on Saturday in the fourth round qualifying match in the U.S. Open Cup.

The 7 p.m. match is at Academica Field at 1343 W. Greenway Ave., south of downton Turlock.

The Turlock-based Academica SC competes in the fourth division National Premier Soccer League.

The winner qualifies for the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (USOC), the country’s oldest knockout tournament.

This is one of seven games kicking off this weekend to decide the final entrants into the tournament.

Academica began qualifying for the tournament in September and have defeated several Northern California teams.

Local youth baseball players picked to represent regional teams for summer tourney: On March 23, the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSA) Baseball Program held a tryout in Ripon, where athletes were selected to represent regional teams in the USSA All-American Games from July 28-Aug 3 in Viera, Fla.

Across the eight teams that were chosen (ages 8-14), a number of local athletes were picked: 14u (Dominic Damante, Mark-Anthony-Valente), 12u (Blaine Fusi, Joseph Salacup), 8u (Alec Machado).

The players were put through a variety of drills and scored on how well they did.
