Kadry on Bowling: Modesto’s Erickson leads men’s scratch division in Peach Classic
The 66th annual Peach Classic got off to a busy start at McHenry Bowl last weekend.
Tim Weston, bowling out of Corning, topped the main list with his 1,193 set. Modesto’s Don Erickson is high on the men’s scratch list with an 1,161 total. High for the women’s scratch is Pam Starling of Oakland, scoring a 936 series. Joe Petrovich of Tracy shot high game for the men, a 269, and Oakland’s Carmen Taylor posted a 227 for the women’s high game. The tournament runs 10 more weekends with squads competing at noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry fee is $60 per person and includes seven prize lists.
On Saturday, the noon squad for the Peach Classic has been designated as a special local’s squad. For any local bowler who has competed in a Modesto league this past season, one free special handicap bracket will be included in their entry. Regular brackets will also be available. In other local tournament action, Ken Davidson, Ronald Swickard and Mike Swickard tallied a score of 2,499 to win the Mixed Kegler Trios at McHenry. Mike Swickard paced the team with an 806 set. Second place was taken by the team of Betty Gerritsen, Ted Cicero and Ray Vegas (2,460). Finishing third (2,394) was the team of David Rhodes, Bud Thompson and John Garcia. ...
Janet Spooner topped the women’s list in the Senior Fun Day Tournament with an 869 set that included a no-tap 300 game. Marlene Katsufrakis finished second with an 831 total. Taking third was Teeny Allen (830). Russell Sanborn was high for the men’s side with his 851 set, while Fran Mendes earned second with his 840. Gary Humphreys (819) was third.
The Vanessa Brown Homes 2015 PBA Western Region Pro-Am will be held at Yosemite Lanes and the dates are set for June 19-20 at 7:30 p.m. The tournament is sectioned into three divisions and will be a no-tap event. Divisions and entry fees are Seniors ($25), Adults ($40) and Juniors ($20). The Pro-Am runs in conjunction with the annual PBA Regional and Senior pro tour stop that weekend. Entries are out for the innaugural 2015 Modesto Queens Tournament held at Yosemite Lanes and hosted by the Modesto USBC. Qualifying will be held July 18 at 2:30 p.m. The top bowlers will return July 19 at 9 a.m. to roll the double-elimination two-game final matches. Entry fees is $125 per person. PBA bowler Chris Barnes and coach Mark Baker will make a return visit to Modesto in September for their annual bowling clinic at Yosemite. The class will be held Sept. 12-13. The schedule includes on-lane instruction and classroom seminars. The fee for the two day coaching clinic is $350, which includes all bowling, instruction, materials and lunch both days. The California State USBC has opened entries for the Adult Youth Scholarship Doubles June 20-21. The tournament is running in three different locations – Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights, Black Oak Lanes in Tuolumne and Winnetka Bowl in Los Angeles. Three divisions are offered, a scratch and two handicapped lists. The tournament is set-up to allow new bowlers without averages to enter. Walk-ins are welcome.
