Kadry on Bowling: Hart-Ransom student wins bantam division at pro-am
Youth bowler Carter Christensen won the Bantam division in the Stars of Tomorrow Junior Pro-Am as part of the Earl Anthony Memorial PBA Western Region Open this past weekend at Dublin Bowl. Christensen, an 11-year-old student at Hart-Ransom Academic Charter School, rolled an 807 set for the win. He is averaging 130 after two years in the sport with coaching help from his dad. Christensen earned a $100 scholarship for placing first.
Charlie Mew and Janet Spooner can claim the honors in the VA Golden Games Fundraiser, but the vets are the real winners. Nearly $300 was collected for the local vet teams to head for the VA Golden Games in Omaha, Neb. Mew topped the men’s list with his 887 no-tap set. Richard Weiglein finished second, posting an 842 total. Ron Gilbert was third with an 840. Spooner led the ladies’ field with her 892 score. Ieko Click rolled an 839 to take second, followed by Lana Trantham in third at 829.
The team of Debbie Couch, Char Moscato and Cindy James topped the field in the Ladies Trio Team No-tap Tournament with a score of 2,371. Lydia Sparks, Claudelle Bonaccinie and Betty Gerritsen teamed up to take second place scoring a 2,303 team total. Third-place honors went to the teammates Rose Baker, Tena Cozby and Carol Hancock with a score of 2,289. Hancock was high in the tournament with her 763 set on games of 236, 263 and 264.
Summer leagues start next week and run through the end of August. Spots are open for singles, couples or teams in youth, adult and senior leagues. Two tournaments are set for Friday. In the morning the Ladies No-tap Trio Luncheon Sweeper bowls at 9:30 a.m. at Yosemite. At 1 p.m. at McHenry the Senior No-Tap Singles will compete. Check-in for both is half an hour prior to start.
If your team is not signed up for the end-of-league tournaments running this week, call your bowling center to reserve a spot. At McHenry, the 36th annual Tournament of Champions and the 22nd annual Cellar Dwellers Tournament run with squads every day. The Pot of Gold Tournament is rolling at Yosemite and is open to all leagues participating in the Pot of Gold program.
The 15th annual Benefit Bowl, in support of the Graduation Coach Program, is coming up soon. Teams will be bowling on May 16 at either noon or 2 p.m. A barbecue lunch is included and starts at 11:30 a.m. Participants come out for a day of colored-pin bowling to music, food, prizes, silent auction and much more. The Anytime Handicap Doubles with a Twist Tournament is running at Yosemite whenever lanes are available or during your league play there. The event has four handicap divisions – Mixed, Men, Women and Century (combined 100 years of age or older). Bowlers can ‘wheel’ their entry to use their scores with up to four people. On May 16, the Modesto USBC will be hosting a Bowler Appreciation barbecue at Enslen Park, 501 Stoddard Ave., in Modesto. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch, served from noon to 2 p.m., will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and cookies. Cost is $5 per family and tickets are available at the bowl desks or from an association member.
