NUTS OPEN HOMESTAND WITH WALKOFF WIN

The post-game fireworks capped a thrilling Friday night for the Modesto Nuts, who scored in the bottom of the ninth for a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Lancaster JetHawks. A crowd of 4,421 at Thurman Field watched Modesto’s Jordan Patterson race home from third on Edison Frias’ wild pitch for the game-winner to start the Nuts’ seven-game homestand. Modesto, which trailed 2-0 after six innings, launched its comeback on Patterson’s RBI double in the seventh. The Nuts tied it in the eighth when Raimel Tapia, who doubled, scored on an infield throwing error. Reliever Carlos Estevez (3-0) retired Lancaster in order in the ninth for the win. Starter Antonio Senzatela allowed two earned runs in six innings – including a solo home run in the fourth by A.J. Reed – and struck out seven. The Nuts and the JetHawks meet again tonight at 7:05.

ANOTHER SCHOLAR AWARD FOR MJC MEN’S GOLF

The Modesto Junior College men’s golf team received the California Community College Athletic Association Scholar Team Award for the third time since 2010. Coach Ron Gross learned that the 2014 Pirates joined the 2010 and 2011 teams to be honored by the CCCAA, which identifies one team in each sport for the award each year. The Pirates’ team grade-point average last year was 3.15. The team was recognized last month at a CCCAA awards luncheon in Ontario.
