Kadry on Bowling: Spots remain open for summer bowling leagues

Winter bowling leagues are sweeping out this week, and the summer league program is gearing up to start May 11, running through the end of August. Leagues including trip and merchandise packages are offered, plus the regular lineup of handicap and scratch programs.

Don Mathey won the April Scratch 6-Gamer Tournament last weekend. Mathey qualified second by rolling a 1,518 total, with the help of a 300 game. Leading the qualifying was PBA Regional and Modesto Masters Champion Gregory Thompson Jr. He started with a 279-279-242 for an even 800 and finished his set at 1,568 for the six. In the stepladder finals, Mathey faced Thompson in a match that looked like it was headed for a 290-279 victory for Thompson. That was, until Thompson left a “Greek Church” (4-6-7-9-10 split) in the ninth, opening the door for Mathey’s 279-238 win. Mathey took home $308 for the win and a berth in the year-end Tournament of Champions. ...

Joe Fontes and Frank Nuzzi teamed up to win the Any Doubles Will Do No-tap Tournament at McHenry. The pair shot a 1,695 for the win. Teeny Allen and Earl Purcell finished second with a 1,629. Bill and Vickie Briscoe were a close third with 1,627. ...

The VA Palo Alto Golden Aged Bears No-Tap Bowling Tournament rolls at McHenry this Saturday at 1 p.m. The tournament will help local vets attend the 2015 Golden Age Games in Omaha, Neb., in August. Three league-ending tournaments are making their annual showing. At McHenry, the 36th annual Tournament of Champions runs next week with squads every day. The 22nd annual Cellar Dwellers Tournament, made up of last-place teams, is advertised as the Tournament to find the Best of the Worst. It runs during the same squad times as the Champs and guarantees $600 to the winner. The Pot of Gold Tournament will roll at Yosemite during the same time period and is open to all leagues participating in the Pot of Gold program. ...

McHenry Bowl’s 15th annual Benefit Bowl is partnering with the Graduation Coach Program this year. The Benefit Bowl is set for May 16 with two squads available at noon and 2 p.m. Participants come out for a day of colored-pin bowling to music, food, prizes, a silent auction and more. The Anytime Handicap Doubles with a Twist Tournament is running at Yosemite through Sept. 7. The event has four handicap divisions – mixed, men, women and century (combined 100 years of age or older). The Modesto USBC Bowler Appreciation BBQ will be celebrated May 16. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Enslen Park in Modesto. Lunch, served from noon to 2 p.m., will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and cookies. Cost is $5 per family, and tickets are available at the bowl desks or from an association member.
