Modesto JC’s Roberts named field events MVP at Big 8 track
Modesto Junior College’s Daniel Roberts has enjoyed a huge freshman year, and it only got bigger at the Big 8 Conference Championships.
Roberts, a South Dakota product, won the shot put Friday (54 feet, 6 inches) to add to his school-record victory in the discus on Tuesday at Merritt College. With that, he was named the conference’s Field Events Athlete of the Year.
The only blemish was Roberts’ three fouls in the hammer throw. He’s ranked first in the state in the discus and third in the shot put.
Modesto also picked up victories by Onix Paredes in the pole vault (15-4) and Dwight Shaw in the long jump (23-0). The Pirates’ 4x100 relay team – Russell Maxwell, Matthew East, Justin Burton and Shaw – placed second and lowered the school record to 40.89 seconds. That broke the record co-held by teams in 1998 and 2008.
Overall, Modesto placed second behind American River.
“A lot of guys stepped up in ways we didn’t expect,” coach Demetrius Snaer said. “We did a good job.”
Erick Loomis placed second in the hammer, and Alexies Reynoso was fourth in the 5,000.
For the MJC women, freshman Harleen Pabla doubled in the 1,500 meters (4:52.08) and 5,000 meters (19:05.4) to lead the Pireates to a second-place finish. Pabla, who also played for MJC’s NorCal semifinalist soccer team, added a fourth in the 800 meters.
The Pirates finished with 181 points to trail American River with 201. Melissa George also helped MJC’s cause with a win in the hammer throw (142-10).
Placing second were Modesto’s Alexandra Golikov in the discus, Lia Burrell in the triple jump, Grace Perreira in the pole vault and Sarah Mayfield in the 400 (personal-record 57.24).
Women’s tennis
MJC duo in quarters in Ojai – Vanessa Teves and Chiara Adamo, MJC’s top doubles pair, have won three matches to reach the quarterfinals of the CCCAA Dual Team State Championships. One win required three sets, as the duo that anchored the Pirates’ run to the state team final stayed alive. In singles, Teves and Adamo each won two matches before they were eliminated.
Baseball
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Cal State Stanislaus 1 in Pomona – Cal State Stanislaus pitchers Colby DeVries, Donnie Fairchilds and Chris Sauls held 15th-ranked Pomona to four hits, but untimely walks led to the Warriors’ California Collegiate Athletic Association loss.
The Warriors (19-24, 14-19 CCAA) closed the deficit to 2-1 in the sixth when Marcus Mastrobuoni singled to right to bring in Nick Ippolito. The Broncos (32-11, 24-9) limited Stanislaus to five hits, however, and contained the Warriors’ attack.
The four-game series continues with a doubleheader today in Pomona at 11 a.m.
Sacramento 7, Modesto JC 4 in Sacramento – The Pirates (11-23-1, 5-16 Big 8) finished their season with a Big 8 loss at Sacramento (17-19, 9-12). The Panthers swept the three-game series.
Enochs 8, Modesto 1 (8) at Modesto – The Eagles kept their Modesto Metro Conference championship hopes alive with an eight-run outburst in the eighth inning. Enochs (7-3) is two games back in the loss column behind co-leaders Gregori and Beyer (7-1).
C.J. Hackett and Dylon Jackson were locked in a pitchers’ duel until the eighth. Joe Blair had a two-run triple in the frame. Hackett went the distance and lowered his earned-run average to 1.25.
Gregori 10, Johansen 0 at Johansen – Jeff Gray was dominant, striking out 12 while allowing just two hits and a walk in a win over the Vikings. Andrew Urrutia was 2 for 2 with two doubles for the Jags, while Dom Carillo was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Mike Olivarez also had two hits.
Gregori starts a two-game series with Enochs on Wednesday and concludes the set on Friday.
Beyer 5, Davis 1 at Davis – The Patriots and Spartans were locked in a 1-1 game when Beyer broke out with four runs in the sixth inning, remaining in a tie for first place atop the MMC standings.
Ryan Frakes scored the first run of the game on Anthony Enwiya’s single in the second. After Davis tied it in the third when Emanuel Rivera scored on an error, Beyer went ahead for good on Frakes’ RBI single in the sixth.
Turlock 5, Merced 3 in Turlock – Brandon Booz was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, helping the Bulldogs to a win over the Bears in a key Central California Conference matchup. The Bears’ six-game win streak came to an end as Turlock remained a game behind crosstown rival Pitman.

Natalie Dorsey and Nicollette Vizcaino also drove in runs for Stanislaus to support winning pitcher Natalie Rendon.
The Seawolves took the opener 3-1. The Warriors and Sonoma meet for another doubleheader today at noon at Stanislaus.
