Local Digest: Cal State Stanislaus rallies to another CCAA golf title
A new format led to the same result as last season – Cal State Stanislaus is the men’s golf champion of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Warriors defeated Cal State East Bay 31/2-11/2 in Wednesday’s head-to-head final at Brookside Country Club for the title, the program’s fourth as members of the CCAA.
All eight league teams played 36 holes of stroke play to determine the individual champion, and the top four teams qualified for Tuesday’s head-to-head semifinals. Stanislaus advanced to the finals by beating Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday.
Anthony Manguray, Michael Mencaccy and Tyler Leeworthy won their matches and sophomore Connor Day halved his contest to account for the Stanislaus points. Adam Stone picked up the Pioneers’ only full point with a win over Stanislaus freshman Jahaan Nargussi.
“They worked really hard yesterday to get back by Monterey Bay. Today, (the Warriors) came out of the gate hot and they kept plugging along,” Stanislaus coach John Cook said. “We played great today and had four scores under par as a team. It was a really good battle.”
Leeworthy’s win clinched the championship. East Bay’s Sam Lavelle led by a stroke after nine holes, but his triple bogey on the par-5 10th that Leeworthy birdied changed the match. The senior from Galt pulled away with birdies at the 16th and 17th to win by nine strokes.
“I put him (Leeworthy) out there later in the lineup because I thought it was his time,” Cook said. “He’s a senior and he’s been wanting (to have a strong outing) all year. I’m very proud of him.”
Stanislaus will carry this momentum to the NCAA West Regional on May 4-6 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo.
“They finally started to believe in themselves and their abilities again,” Cook said. “We had it going in the fall but lost ourselves a little bit early in the spring. We got it back together now.”
