Kadry on Bowling: Garbers win Modesto USBC Scratch Championships
Will Garber and mom Bonnie Garber claimed the top honors in the sixth annual Modesto USBC Scratch Championships.
Entering the last game at Yosemite, Will Garber at 1,215 was sitting in the third spot after Rich Custer (1,240) and John Walsh III (1,225). Garber pulled a 267 final game to take over the top spot with his 706 set and 1,482 finish. Custer posted a 700 series to place second at 1,475. Walsh finished third at a 1,440.
The field of 24 played its first round of three games at McHenry Bowl. On the men’s side, Custer took the first-round lead with a 775 set on games of 289, 218 and 268. Garber was a close second at 773 after rolling 246, 268 and 259. Rounding out the top three was Jim Gordin posting 257, 235 and 275 for a 767 series. For the ladies, Bonnie Garber was the lead with a 700, which included games of 190, 246 and 264. Tara Riddle was close behind with a 685 series on games of 224, 224 and 237. They then moved to Yosemite to finish the final three games.
Bonnie Garber added a 659 to her total with games of 201, 212 and 246 to hold the lead at a 1,359. Tina Munson moved into second after a 688 set that included a 278 game for an overall 1,318. The two Garbers will be recognized at the annual Modesto Installation and Awards Dinner in October.
An association record was broken this past week. The previous four-person/four-game series record of 3,817 was eclipsed by more than 100 pins by the Bowling Outfitters team in the Black Oak Classic. Myles Duty led the team with games of 280, 268, 279 and 246 for a 1,073 set. Dave Bolles (248, 254, 255, 214), Stephany Walton (269, 257, 244, 194) and Chuck Quiring (258, 206, 246, 201) put together the team total of 3,919. ...
Congratulations to youth bowler Matthew Peters, who bowled his first 800 series. The 19-year-old Modesto Junior College student put together games of 279, 236 and 288 for an 803 total. ...
The Modesto USBC is hosting a Bowler Appreciation barbecue on May 16. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Enslen Park in Modesto. Lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. and will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and cookies. There will be several activities including horseshoes, face painting and a goldfish giveaway. Cost is only $5 per family. Tickets are available at the bowl desks or from an association member. ...
Ray and Deana Swickard teamed with Cindy James to win the Mixed Kegler Trio Tournament at McHenry. The team shot 2,499 for the win. Ray paced the team with an 810 set including a no-tap 300. Loren and Janet Spooner joined Lana Trantham to register a 2,376 total and finish second. Bre Sandoval, Bud Thompson and Rick Lazaro placed third after posting a 2,457. Lazaro boosted the team with his 844 set and Thompson added an 800. ...
Pat Riley won the men’s side of the Yosemite Senior No-Tap with a 958. Willie Ereso placed second at 946. Taking the third spot was Gary Riley with a 911 set. The three, along with Benny Sanchez, each posted a no-tap 300 game. Kim Heller led the ladies with an 866. Pat Kirschman followed with an 820. Falling into third was Lydia Sparks at a 799. ...
On Friday, the Any Doubles Will Do No-tap is bowling at McHenry starting at 1 p.m. Potluck lunch starts at noon and check-in is at 12:30. Teams can be any combination of men and women. ...
On Sunday the April sweeper of the Scratch 6-Gamer competes at Yosemite. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. and tournament scoring starts at noon. The field will be rolling on the Yosemite house shot. Entry fee is $60 with optional high game, last game, senior insurance and brackets also available.
