Local digest: Gregori pitcher Dugo leads Jags to MMC win over Modesto

Gregori pitcher Anthony Dugo dominated in a 10-0 Modesto Metro Conference victory over Modesto High School on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Jaguars (12-5) improved to 4-1 in the MMC, a half-game behind leader Beyer, which has the league bye this week. The Panthers (6-14), who entered the game tied with Gregori for second place, fell to 3-2.

Dugo allowed just four hits while walking none and striking out five in the shutout. He got plenty of help offensively from Jimmy McClenaghan, who was 3 for 4 with a double. Tyler Janitz, Berto Flores, Mike Olivarez and Dom Carrillo had two hits apiece. Hector Guererro was 1 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs.

The teams will meet again Friday at 3:45 p.m. at Streeter Field.

Enochs 10, Downey 4 at Enochs High School – The Eagles scored five runs in the fifth and five in the sixth on their way to a big MMC win over the Knights.

Aaron Davis led Enochs on offense, going 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Trevor Atnip drove in three runs while Ricky Silva had two RBIs.

Manteca 2, Central Catholic 1 at Modesto – The Buffaloes’ Jake Menasco and the Raiders’ Sam Mundt hooked up in a pitchers’ duel and Menasco came out on top.

Menasco went the distance, allowing just three hits and a walk. The Raiders, in turn, got a solid effort from Mundt, who was about as sharp as Menasco. Mundt also pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out five. Only one of the two runs Mundt allowed was earned.

The Buffs (9-8, 4-3 Valley Oak League) took a 2-0 lead in the third when Ronaldo Tijero doubled with one out and later scored on a Dom Pisano single. The Raiders (10-9, 3-4) cut the margin in half in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Dami singled and later scored on a ground out by Travis Waara.

Then Mundt retired 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced while Menasco set down 12 of the final 15.

Sierra 15, Kimball 4 at Tracy – The Timberwolves scored five runs in the first inning, Kimball countered with three in the second before Sierra broke the game open with a 10 runs in the fourth – all coming with two outs. Nick Lucchetti’s two-run single and Anthony Arredondo’s two-run double highlighted the attack. Jake Souza had a two-run triple in the first for the Timberwolves.

Colleges

MJC decathlete eighth – Modesto Junior College’s Nicholas Pulos placed eighth at the Northern California Decathlon Finals, which finished Wednesday at College of San Mateo. Pulos totaled 5,313 points over the 10 events, far behind champion Chase Pacheco of Hartnell (Salinas) with 6,507. The top six will return to San Mateo on May 15-16 for the California Community College Athletic Association Championships.

Nunes gets coaching post – Joey Nunes, a former runner at CSU Stanislaus, has been named head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont. Most recently, Nunes spent a season as an assistant at his alma mater, where his focus was on recruiting.
