Kadry on Bowling: Modesto’s Duchscher, Hedrick claim state championships

Modesto produced two state champions in the Helen Duval Bowlers to Veterans Link Tournament held recently at McHenry Bowl.

Teresa Duchscher won the Women’s C Division state title by one pin with her 505 set. Duchscher, who carries an average of 150, rolled games of 160, 176 and 169 for the win. Second-place Angela Kreisler of Marin posted a 504. In the Men’s D Division, Bob Hedrick’s 491 topped the field. Hedrick rolled games of 151, 153 and 187, topping his 128 average in each game.

Nationally, BVL donates $1 million annually to fund recreational equipment and therapeutic supplies for America’s veterans. All money raised through the local bowling associations is used in facilities in Northern California, including the Modesto Vet Center. ...

City Tournament All-Events winners were announced in three divisions. Topping the women’s handicap list is Sheri Cole with a 2,148 total. The men’s handicap winner is Stephen Roy, shooting a 2,291 total. His dad, Tim Roy, finished second with a 2,173 score. Rich Custer placed first on the men’s scratch list with a 2,152. ...

Debbie Couch, Deana Swickard and Cindy James won the Ladies Trio No-Tap Tournament at McHenry with a 2,392 score. Taking second was the team of Rose Baker, Tena Cozby and Carol Hancock (2,301). In a close third were Ann Zuidema, Lydia Sparks and Pat Baskin (2,300). ...

Rich Custer turned in a nice 859 series this past week on games of 300, 259 and 300. He was a strike away from either matching or eclipsing the all-time high series in the city of 868 set by Paul Mendes in 2010 and matched by Will Garber in 2012. ...

The second annual Strike Out Suicide Bowlathon will be held at McHenry on Saturday. Bowling starts at 1 p.m., and a barbecue lunch begins at noon. Cost is $50 per person and includes bowling, shoe rental, lunch and an event T-shirt. There is still room for individuals and teams. Two events are on the calendar for Friday. The Ladies No-Tap Trios Luncheon is set to roll at Yosemite at 9:30 a.m. Check-in begins at 9. At 1 p.m., the Senior No-Tap Tournament starts at McHenry. A potluck begins at noon, followed by check-in at 12:30 p.m. ...

Local veterans hope to make their way to the Golden Age Games in Omaha, Neb., this August. A fundraiser to help pay expenses, the VA Palo Alto Golden-Aged Bears Bowling Tournament, will run at McHenry on May 2 at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per person for the three-game, no-tap event. The deadline is looming for scholarship applications to be submitted. Students in Modesto high schools can earn scholarship money for college even if they do not bowl. For graduating seniors bowling in a youth league, the Hall of Fame Scholarship is available. Also, the Director’s Scholarship is available for students who may or may not bowl but their parents or grandparents bowl. Applications are available at the bowl desks. Students have until April 15 to turn then in.
