Mayle’s workout stirs demand
Receiver Vince Mayle, who played at Inderkum High in Sacramento before moving on to Washington State, worked out in front of 14 NFL teams Wednesday and has a visit set up this month with the 49ers, his agent, Cameron Foster, said.
The big-bodied wide receiver set Washington State records in receptions (106) and receiving yards (1,483) last season in coach Mike Leach’s up-tempo offense. On Wednesday, he measured 6-foot-21/2 and 222 pounds and was timed in the 40-yard dash from 4.52 seconds to 4.63 seconds.
Foster said Mayle ran 25 to 30 pass patterns with one drop, not bad considering Mayle has a broken thumb. He apparently suffered the injury at the Senior Bowl in January. When examined at the scouting combine the following month, Mayle was told he had a fracture.
He wasn’t able to take part in the bench press at the combine but still caught passes. He’s had a cast on his thumb and forearm for the past 21/2 weeks, Foster said, but removed it for the session. He’ll need to have it recasted for the injury to fully heal.
Washington State held its pro day March 12, but more NFL teams were on hand for Wednesday’s session, including the Seahawks, Browns and Falcons, all of whom sent their wide receivers coaches. The Raiders sent a scout.
The 49ers will meet with Mayle on April 13-14, one of 30 visits they are allotted. Mayle has already met with the Dolphins and Falcons and has another seven teams on his visit list. That includes a meeting with the Browns today.
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein described Mayle as a “moldable piece of clay.” Mayle played running back at Inkerkum and then spent two years playing basketball at Shasta Community College.
