Local digest: Cal State Stanislaus finishes sixth in Livermore tournament

Freshman Jahaan Nargussi finished tied for 14th with a 6-over-par 222 to lead the Cal State Stanislaus men’s golf team to sixth place in the 18-team NDNU Argonaut Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, according to the school’s website.

Nargussi fired a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, and the Warriors finished at 34-over 898.

Cal State Monterey Bay won the event with an 860 and was the only team to finish under the par of 864. Otters senior Brandon Hortt was the medalist at 6-under 210. Only three other golfers finished under par.

Sophomore Connor Day had the best final round among the Warriors with an even-par 72 and finished at 7-over 223 to tie for 19th with four others, including his teammate, junior Michael Mencaccy.

The Warriors competed without returning All-American Anthony Manquray, who had stomach flu, according to the website.

Baseball

Diablo Valley 8, Modesto JC 7 (10) – The Pirates (6-8-1, 0-1 Big 8 Conference) lost a back-and-forth game to the visiting Vikings (4-12, 1-0) in a Big 8 opener, according to MJC.

MJC led 4-2 after two innings, then trailed 7-4 after four. The Pirates rallied with two runs in the seventh, then tied it 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth. Diablo Valley scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th.

Jacob Cooper was 3 for 6 with an RBI, and Matt Clark and Robert Steves each had two hits.

Softball

Cosumnes River 9, Modesto JC 0 – The host Pirates were only able to muster two singles against Hawks starter Amanda Horbasch and are still looking for their first Big 8 victory this season, according to MJC.

Shannen Castle and Yassmine Garcia each had a hit for the Pirates (5-15, 0-3 Big 8), who play Saturday at Sacramento City.

Tennis

MJC women – In an 8-1 victory over visiting Reedley (1-5, 1-4 Big 8 South), the Pirates (10-0, 6-0) swept the singles matches, according to an MJC news release. The win was highlighted by 6-0, 6-0 victories for No. 3 Parker Pilati and No. 6 Rebekah Jacobson.

MJC men – The Pirates didn’t drop a set during their 9-0 win over visiting Reedley.
