Kadry on Bowling: Mantecan wins USBC Queens tourney

McHenry Bowl hosted the second annual Modesto USBC Queens Tournament last weekend, with top women bowlers competing for a first prize of $2,000 thanks to local community sponsorships.

Each participant bowled six games of qualifying Saturday, and the top eight returned Sunday for the finals. It took a score of 1,324 (220.6 average) to make the cut to the two-game, match-play, double-elimination finals. The high qualifying score was posted by Amanda Fry of Antelope with a 1,457 (242.8 avg.).

In the final rounds, Jasmine Coleman of Manteca emerged as the champion, winning three consecutive matches and in the process averaging 255.6 for six games.

The title match was a different story. Pam Schaal of Modesto came out of the losers’ bracket and was ready for the task of having to defeat Coleman twice to claim the crown. In a nailbiter, Schaal won the first match 472-466.

Now, Schaal would have to defeat Coleman a second time, but Coleman turned up the heat to win 480-452 and claim the Queen’s title and tiara. Coleman won $2,000. Schaal received $1,101.

Rounding out the top four were Jennifer Dirckx of Antioch earning $725 for finishing third and Andee Tadiello of Oakley in fourth for $500. Local bowler Bonnie Garber finished seventh for $225.

Tadiello rolled a 290 for the high game of the tournament.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled for Oct. 7-8 at Yosemite Lanes.
