Gene Richards: No senator, daylight savings time doesn’t add more daylight

Re “State Senate defeats daylight saving bill” (Page 6A, Aug. 24): In its present form, it doesn’t take long to peruse the entire Modesto Bee. By my second cup of coffee, I’m usually half way through the crossword puzzle. But this morning, Aug. 24, I was brought up short and had to re-read an article headlined, “State Senate defeats daylight saving bill.”

I am personally ambivalent about daylight savings and I was taken aback by Sen. Jim Nielsen, R-Gerber, and his defense of daylight savings. “Our crops have gotten accustomed to that (daylight savings). They’ve in fact been bred to deal with the longer harvest season.”

Does Sen. Nielsen actually think daylight savings adds an hour to our day?

Just how you teach a stalk of corn that the sun rises at 5 a.m. rather than 6 is mystifying. I’ve always been against term limits because I feel they reduce the experience level in a governing body. I am rethinking my position.

Gene Richards, Modesto
