Robert G. Walton: Diversity of languages produces division, not a cohesive society
The letter “English defines us; make it mandatory” (Aug. 11) correctly asserts the English language is a common denominator which carries no prejudice and is essential for immigrants to assimilate. Multilingualism, multiculturalism and diversity produce division. This experiment has been a great failure in the UK and Europe and has encouraged racism. Unfortunately, we make it easy for immigrants not to speak English with government and public signs in multiple languages. The American culture (made up of its tradition and history ) and the English language should be a true requirement for citizenship, not just a token as it is now.
