Richard Cato: Yes, Trump is a litmus test for Jeff Denham and other Republicans

Re “If Jeff Denham can’t reject Trump, we must reject him” (Page 1D, Aug. 7): The Bee was correct to make support for Donald Trump a litmus test in this election cycle. Trump has made it so! Republicans might prefer to argue policy, but by allowing Trump to headline your ticket, you have allowed him to make this election “all about him.” Trump has no interest in the nuances of policy debate.

Rep. Denham, you argue Trump’s words are troubling, but judge Clinton on her record. Aren’t we arguing apples and oranges? Look at Trump’s record – oops, he has none. Point Clinton? Let’s look at their words – oops, you say Trump is “ rightfully criticized for his words.” Perhaps a draw?

You whine about not being judged on your record, but list none of your accomplishments as a defense. Your retort is you are supported by a bevy of special interest groups, government employees and small business people.

Lastly, you profess to be an independent thinker. Seriously? Do you not support most , if not all, positions the Republican Party takes on matters of substance? If not, enlighten me.

Republicans know they made a mistake but lack the courage to admit it. Your thoughts?
