Kathleen Hughes: Why doesn’t Modesto offer curbside recycling?

I just returned to Omaha after visiting my sister in your lovely city. I was shocked and saddened to hear that you do not have a curbside recycling program. I always thought California was ahead of all states when it comes to trying to save the Earth from waste. Please consider curbside recycling. Reduce, reuse, recycle, restore, re-purpose!

Kathleen Hughes, Omaha, Neb.

Editor’s note: Modesto was one of the first cities in America to offer curbside recycling in 1972, but passage of the “bottle bill” placed value on recyclable materials. Glass, plastics and aluminum are redeemed at more than 30 buy-back centers in the city. Organic waste is placed in a special can, collected by the city and composted.
