Jeff Azlin: Who will pay to enforce Obama’s ‘family values’?
Re “Time for ‘family values’ Congress to value families” (Opinions, Jan. 26): What exactly did the Republican-controlled Congress do to make life harder for families in its first few weeks of power? The answer from The Bee editors is that Republicans didn’t rush to transfer wealth from people who earned it to those who don’t earn enough to support their children by way of child-care subsidies, tax credits and forcing employers to provide paid leave.
Who pays the tab for all the government giveaways?
While I agree with your contention that raising children is expensive, I do not agree that it is also my responsibility to pay for everyone else’s expensive child-rearing costs.
It only became important to President Obama as a weapon to be used against the Republicans in the 2016 elections, which you pointed out. But you are intellectually dishonest in your criticism of the Republicans. Grandiose dreams by the President to help real American families don’t fit well with reality. What is genuine, meaningful, nationwide relief for families? Someone has to pay for all this and I am part of a real American family who never asked other people to pay for my children’s daycare or other expenses. Stop demanding that I pay for theirs!
