Timothy Buchanan: We should have compassion, even for the misguided

Re “Why I have hope for the world’s future” (page 3D, June 19) and “Those who serve should never be subject to hate” (Our View, June 19): Thanks twice to The Bee editorial staff on Fathers Day. I chose to first read the article by his holiness the Dalai Lama, a truly admirable human being. His focus on the compassion available to us all was a pleasure to read. Second I went to the editorial on hate for those who serve. Again, I cannot agree more with your opinion.

Misguided, ignorant citizens like Donald Trump and Justen Mackenroth could learn a great lesson from His Holiness. Their designated path ironically would lead our nation squarely into a totalitarian society which many of us find so contrary to our understanding of universal human connectedness. I am reminded that His Holiness contends that we are all in pursuit of happiness and away from struggle. But too often we find happiness in fear and intolerance. Thanks again to The Bee and to Luis Molina for his exemplary service.
