William Cahill: They learned a second language; you can, too
Re “You’re welcome, but speak English” (Letters, June 11): In response, let me start by saying I sincerely hope the writer has found a good, self-fulfilling job. But her lament does not hold up. She, as an English-only speaker, says the employer hopes to employ a bilingual person. No one is born bilingual, so the person being considered and hired for the job has, in fact, learned “our” language. Learning a second language can be a very fulfilling endeavor and can be accomplished by anyone willing to try.
Employers want to be able to assist their customers who have not yet become proficient in “our” language. In closing, as a 90 year old Irishman, let me say, “Vaya con Dios” my friend
