Lisa Russell: Immigrants welcome, but they should learn our language

Re “Immigrants: Embrace our flag, nation, language” (Letters, June 7): I agree wholeheartedly. First, I need to say, I am accepting of all people. I welcome anyone who wants to come to the United States in search of a better way of life as long as they come willing to make a contribution. That is what this great country was built on.

What I have a hard time accepting is those who come to take advantage of our generous culture. I am proud to be third-generation American and hope that I live my life in such a way as to display my pride. I would never, ever move to another country and not expect to show my gratitude by doing such things as earning my way, contributing to my community in some way and at the very least, learning the language.

I have been searching for a job for the last few months and have been prevented from applying for many positions because I am not bilingual. Some jobs say bilingual preferred but not required, but I know I will not be hired. While I understand the practicality of this requirement, I can’t help but feel resentful. How does someone move to a new country and expect the people to adapt to them? Welcome to my country. I hope you have a wonderful life, here but please learn our language.
