Greg Masztal: Why wait for Catholic Church to alter views on divorce?
Despite much fanfare over the changes hoped for under Pope Francis, the recent article (“Divorced Catholics have frayed relationship with their church,” Page A6, Jan. 25) on the fate of divorced Catholics is a sad witness to the status quo maintained by Rome. While never divorced, and as a former Roman Catholic, I knew many friends who suffered through bad marriages and divorces. To declare them as outcasts just added insult to injury.
Jesus’ love and ministry extended to all the outcasts of society. How can priests, bishops, cardinals or the Pope withhold Communion from believers when Jesus served even his betrayer, Judas Iscariot, at the Last Supper? In the Episcopal Church, all baptized believers are welcomed to the Communion table. We are all sinners; we are all needful of God’s love and forgiveness. There’s no more need to wait – come join us at St. Paul’s.
