Re “ACE rail extension an uphill endeavor” (Page A1, Jan. 25): Regarding extending the ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) train to Modesto and possibly Turlock: I don’t understand why Modesto wants to become even more of a commuter town serving the Bay Area. High-paid workers from Silicone Valley will easily bid up the prices of homes until they are out of reach of the locals who will, in turn, have to commute from towns farther south.
It would be preferable to move more jobs from the Bay Area to Modesto so people don’t have to commute at all. They could then spend more time with their families.
