Mary Griffin: Modesto’s big heart beats strong, as always

Re “Our yard is bad; so is our health” (Letters, May 28): Thank you for your letters section. Obviously, a lot of people read them! Recently, I wrote a letter that was published on Saturday (in print; online May 25) and I am amazed at the amount of response it got!

It was meant to be an explanation for the sad state of my yard, not a plea for help. However, a number of kind people contacted me and offered to help me change things. All were generous and caring offers from strangers with big hearts! I want to thank every one of them for restoring my faith in humanity.

By the time my letter was published, my son had installed my first-ever sprinkler system with a timer, so I can water my yard without breaking any rules. Now we can plant new grass. I explained this to the many callers and thanked them for caring enough to get involved. A lot of them asked me to keep their number and call them back if I need help in the future. I’m overwhelmed by this degree of concern from strangers.
