Jean Redmond: Turn off the violence, make it less ‘normal’ for young people

Once again, gun violence has struck close to home! My heart breaks for the loved ones of the young girl who was killed, for what reason? I pray the boy who was shot will make a full recovery!

This is not another rant on gun control, though I don’t know why anyone needs an assault weapon for any legal purpose! Violent criminals and psychopaths will obtain weapons regardless of any laws passed! Rather I am appalled at the climate of violence in our entertainment! Young children see these shows in their formative years. After scanning nightly programming and finding the airwaves saturated with NCIS, CSI, Dateline, etc. I turn to Friends on Nik, only to be horrified by a commercial about “Scream,” a bloody new show based on the movie that airs about every 20 minutes.

Scream is not airing on Nik, so why is this disturbing commercial shown on a children’s station? I’ve worked with preschoolers and too many times they will tell me the plot of a disturbing program they’ve watched.

Parents: They are paying attention and their ideas of what is normal are being formed. Turn it off!
