Richard Weiglein: Bee should cover Modesto’s real news, like police awards banquet

On May 6 the Modesto police department honored its outstanding officers of the year. Awards were given to officers who gave more than what is expected, from valor in the line of duty to dedication to curbing drugs, to new training concepts. I don’t know all their names, I just know how proud the city of Modesto must be to have these dedicated men and women working every day to keep our city safe.

We, as citizens, should be so grateful that these officers put their lives on the lin;eit is sad The Bee thinks it is more newsworthy to print stories about dog parks or rain puddles. When I read this BS I ask “when are they going to wake up and print some real news”? I like the fact that our police chief writes letters to The Bee to keep us informed, as if he doesn’t have enough on his plate. But someone has to let us know. Like the Chief told me last night, 200 words is not enough to tell what is going on. He should have his own column so he can report to us what is new in the Police Department.

Richard Weiglein, Modesto

Editor’s note: The Bee’s coverage of the Modesto Police Awards Banquet appeared online on May 8 (“Two Modesto police officers honored for saving man’s life”) and in print on May 9 with a story, photo and list of awards winners on Page 3A with a photo on Page 1A.
