Richard and Diana Doll: Contemporary opera at Gallo Center was mesmerizing
A round of applause is due Matthew Buckman and Townsend Opera. “Dead Man Walking” (May 1 at the Gallo Center) was a production which, in the words of a fellow audience member, “grabbed you and didn’t let go.”
The story of Sister Helen Prejean and a death-row inmate showcased her determined work, obstacles and utter faith in the mercy of God. Her struggle to persuade the murderer to finally admit his guilt and ask for forgiveness was mesmerizing.
The difficult and highly dramatic score was beautifully executed by Ryan Murray and orchestra, and the entire cast of singers. The supertitles were easy to read and the staging was seamless. Remarkably, our excellent seats were inexpensive!
Modesto is blessed to have the visionary Matthew Buckman enthusiastically bringing various expressions of opera to all ages. It is a fun and inspiring art form and a touching reminder of what we humans have the ability to do.
