Eileen Wyatt Stokman: Bee supports good old boys over woman demanding change

Re “Tough choice to make in Stanislaus supervisor’s race” (Our View, May 1): Your comments about me being a “disgruntled worker” remind me of when I worked at the San Jose Mercury News in the 1980s. I was called into a director’s office for “griping and bellyaching” all over the plant. I had gone to the human resource director to express my concerns. I was a single parent with a small child, and had to work up to 50 hours a week on a fixed salary. I asked to receive the same amount of pay as my male predecessor. He was getting at least $10,000 more a year. He couldn’t type, however, so they gave the job to a woman because he got paid too much to do that kind of work.

It’s disappointing to see things haven’t changed in the newspaper business. Still trying to keep a woman in her place. Still defending the good old boys no matter about their rap sheets or mismanagement mistakes. Still resisting change and progress in human relations.

Know that many seniors and disabled persons wait up to five months for a social worker to come out and assess their situations. Often it’s too late and they had to leave their homes or die.
