Marilyn C. Fuzie: Many helping hands being offered the homeless

Re “Treat Modesto homeless with respect, love” (Letters, May 1): The person who wrote the letter regarding the homeless accused us of not caring and showing love to our homeless population. However, he did not offer any solutions. If you go to the computer, you can find many agencies and shelters for the homeless in Modesto.

I have been involved in programs through my church, which is only one of several which work to help the homeless. Many homeless don’t want to take advantage of the assistance. One man said he can make more money panhandling than if he had a job. Many have mental and health issues affecting their decisions. However, when a helping hand is offered someone has to reach out and accept that hand – otherwise the programs can’t help. The people who are cooking, serving, sheltering and doing all the other projects are showing their love. If you want to show your love, get involved. Better yet, invite some of the homeless into your home to share meals at your table and sleep in a clean bed.
