Erwin Parent: Bee’s video helps little girl fulfill her dream

Thank you for the article “Greeting cards from around country celebrate Modesto girl’s fifth birthday” (Page 1A, April 14). I’m her grandfather and was present during the interview. Your reporter, Joan Barnett Lee, did an excellent job during a hectic interview with an autistic child and her two siblings.

Because of your coverage, we were contacted by the Fox 40 in Sacramento, who sent a reporter to interview her the next day. The story aired on the six o’clock news that evening. I have been living with them for the past four years and have seen firsthand the wonderful progress Virginia has made.

She was so excited her first week in pre-school that when Saturday arrived, and there was no school, she cried. She is eager to go every day and has not had one meltdown where the parents had to be called. I see her sitting her sister and brother down in front of her chalkboard while she plays “teacher.” I hope that becomes her goal. It is my dream that will happen and one day she’ll be able to help others the way she has been helped.

Keeping the community aware of events such as Autism Awareness Month is one of the things you do best.

Erwin Parent, Modesto
