Robert Wright: Why do we need laws protecting our bathrooms?

So, states in the south are feeling the need to hate on transgender humans, all in an attempt to prove they’re of a conservative fundamentalist religious bent.

The fact that they pass ignorant laws in the middle of the night speaks volumes. Do these new laws provide funding for the genital police to monitor the bathroom doors? Chastity Bono was born a cute little girl and is now a hardy, healthy man named Chaz. If Chaz goes to North Carolina or Mississippi, he is now required by law, to use a restroom labeled “Women.”

Any father or husband would go ballistic if he witnessed Chaz Bono following his daughters or wife into a restroom. How many mothers or wives would be comfortable with an individual who looks like Caitlyn Jenner following their son or husband into a restroom? For over 200 years we have had no need for such laws; why do we need them now? Transgender people have always existed and it’s never been a big deal.

We need to stop this “us-against-them” attitude, with the thems being LBGT, Muslims, refugees, illegal aliens or anyone different from ourselves.

PS – The unisex restroom in my home works just fine.

Robert Wright, Hilmar
