Leroy Egenberger: Prison system failed victim and the criminal
Re “I’m mad; I’m scared, still” (Page 1A, March 20): There is a world of pain in the story of the young woman who, at age 14, was raped and now, at the age of 18, lives in fear of the rapist who was released early from prison. The criminal justice system has failed in protecting this young woman.
The prison system has also failed this young man by shortening the rapist’s sentence without his adequate rehabilitaton. An experienced and respected chaplain at San Quintin State Prison has concluded from his work with inmates that, as crazy as it might sound, a person committing a crime is also sounding, “a cry for help.”
