Karyn Bryant: Stanislaus residents stepping up to help less fortunate

In Stanislaus County, we have incredibly complex issues to tackle – basic welfare, education, mental health, substance abuse, air quality, environmental degradation. The list goes on and on and can sometimes seem insurmountable. Yet, I have hope.

Over the past three years I have seen a newly energized commitment to bettering our community. Events like Love Modesto, Connecting for Good and National Philanthropy Day are raising awareness of the need for local support and providing the tools for making a difference. They give people of all ages the opportunity to take action.

A sincere round-of-applause (maybe a standing ovation) to organizations such as Stanislaus Community Foundation, Association of Fundraising Professionals and Modesto Rotary, among others. They are creating a culture of philanthropy, encouraging those with means to leave their legacy and invest their philanthropic dollars right here, where it makes the most difference for those with the greatest need.

Philanthropy is defined as “the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people.” I’d say Stanislaus County residents are well on their way.
