Richard Cato: More guns won’t end violence from desperate people

Re “Without guns, the French were left defenseless” (Letters, Jan. 14): This letter saddens me. Not only does the logic not work, but it really insults the French and their way of life.

The solution to gun violence is not more guns. We are in the middle of that experiment and so far the results are discouraging. For us to be preaching to the French is absurd.

The real solution to this problem is complex and goes to the very heart of how we live as citizens of the world. Those who commit atrocities have no hope. They feel disrespected and hounded from all sides. They have little or no expectation of improving their lives. They feel that their complaints go unheard, their grievances unresolved, their needs unmet.

People without hope have nothing to lose, so killing and death seem like a reward. There is no one more menacing than a human who has nothing to lose

The solution is complex and difficult to understand. But what should be understandable is that having more guns is not the solution.
