Steven Phinney: Want a kid to learn? Provide consequences

Re “Ceres case not first time teen tied to party plans” (Page 1A, March 13): The parents of this kid are probably wondering why athletes have so many problems! Are these parents kidding themselves? Go ahead “pay for the damages and let’s get to practice,” or just a case of “poor judgement.” How is this little rich brat going to know his judgment is poor if he doesn’t have any consequences? Especially considering this is not the first time!

Central Catholic can show that the school stands for something. Where in the “gospel values” and the “teachings of the Catholic church” does it say “ignore bad behavior” if the kid is an athlete?

Both the parents and the school are doing the kid a disservice. Let’s just hope the parents don’t question why their kid is in trouble when he gets to college.
