John G. Wetzler: Commission trying to circumvent will of people
Re “State’s mandates are costly to communities” (Page 11A, Feb. 27): Responding to the op-ed by Neil McCormick referring to the Commission on State Mandates, which was created by the state legislature. Because the legislature removed themselves from the ire of the voters by appointing the Commission on State Mandates to circumvent the will of the voters. The state will not respect the 83 percent mandate in Proposition 1A and require local governments to pay for state mandated programs by taxing citizens and local governments.
Individuals on the Commission of State Mandates are Michael Cohen, director of the Department of Finance; Chairman John Chiang, State Treasurer; Betty Yee, State Controller; Ken Alex, director of the Office of Planning and Research; Sarah Olsen; Don Saylor, Yolo County supervisor, and Carmen Ramirez.
