Chris Fuzie: Modesto doesn’t look so bad compared to Denver
Re “Modesto hires consultant for passenger flights” (Page 1B, March 3): Again The Bee puts two unrelated items together and misrepresents what the data shows. In the article, reporter Kevin Valine starts out by writing Modesto is ranked 99th of 100 among the nation’s biggest metropolitan areas. If you look at the ranking numbers and compare No.1 (Denver) with No.99 (Modesto), the differences aren’t as dire as inferred by the article. In Overall Rating (out of 10 possible), Denver was 7.8, Modesto 5.3 – a difference of only 2.5 points. In Quality of Life (out of 10 possible) Denver was 6.9 and Modesto was 5.9, a difference of only 1 point. In Value, Denver Ranked 7.4 and Modesto 5.0 – a difference of only 2.4.
Considering all the places there are to live in this country, when Modesto’s Quality of life is only 1 point behind the No.1 ranked city, that might not be so dire, or terrible. Maybe The Bee could start writing factual news reports without always trying to “spin” everything. Bee readers should start thinking independently and check some of The Bee’s statements for themselves.

Editor’s note: Like many Bee writers, Kevin Valine frequently writes notes columns, often including two or more unrelated items.
