Brad Hansen: Turlock council’s action goes against common sense
It has been 30 years since I attended law school. I love law and the order it brings to our journey through life. However my biggest law school take-away was not positive law (human made laws that specify an action or describe specific human rights). It was natural law that made a lifelong imprint on me.
Natural laws comprise of our inherent rights which are bestowed not by acts of legislation but by God, nature or reason. It’s that little voice inside us that says “this is right,” “this is wrong,” or “this just makes common sense.”
When I attended the Turlock City Council meeting last Saturday, I experienced the greatest departure from natural law (common sense) I can remember. I sat with over 130 impassioned citizens who sincerely love Turlock and support their existing not-for-profit Turlock Certified Farmers Market. Not one opposing voice was heard. Not one person addressed the council with an argument in favor of ending the six-year relationship with the volunteer-supported TCFM. Not one voice was heard in favor of the newly drafted Request for Proposals. It’s not too late to reverse this decision. It’s not too late to withdraw an application. It’s common sense.
