Allen Lagarbo: LoveModesto, city staff saving stately redwoods

Enslen Park was planted over 100 years ago with a ring of Coastal Redwoods along the east side of the ballfield. Over many years, more Redwoods were added – including five that were planted by the friendship committee of Modesto’s sister city, Karume, Japan.

In recent years these magnificent trees had been sadly failing. Thanks to efforts by our city parks staff and caring families involved with LoveModesto, I see the trees look better than they have in 20 years. Soil conditioning and irrigation improvements make the difference. Our park and tree heritage is being preserved for future generations to enjoy. Good job to all that helped.

Allen Lagarbo, Modesto

Editor’s note: Lagarbo was the deputy public works director for Modesto when he retired and for 16 years was the city’s arborist.
