Carmelita Boone: Nothing wrong with letter thanking Jesus

Re “Why print a blurb thanking Jesus?” (Page 11A, Feb. 13): The writer appears to not understand the definition of “opinion.” Webster’s Dictionary defines “opinion” as “a belief based not on certainty but on what seems true or probable.”

It’s a sad day in America when we, as a nation, can’t respect other people’s opinions and resort to scoffing. This is offensive, hurtful and unproductive in helping people get along and work together. Isn’t this what is wrong in all levels of our government and our society?

The writer stated, “I strongly support one’s freedom of religion,” but “why The Bee would print such a blurb strikes me as pandering…” This is a contradiction in supporting freedom of religion. In other words, people can have their own opinions on religion, just don’t print them.

Later, she writes, “Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but can’t the ‘Opinion’ page do a better job determining what constitutes a fact based-based opinion?” Does this sound like freedom of speech? Can’t we agree to disagree without being disagreeable?
