Richard McIntyre: Last stop for reverred ‘Chief’ will be in Newman, not Gustine
Re: “Gustine chooses new mascot after governor bans Redskins” (Page 1A, Feb. 12): Concerning the article on the Gustine High School mascot, the caption under the photo of “The Chief” states that the statue is displayed at Gustine High School. After the exciting conclusion to the regular high school football season, the Chief was sent back to Newman. The teams boasted 9-0 records going into the final game of the regular season. The Orestimba Warriors of Newman came from behind to claim the trophy.
The Chief goes to the winner of this annual battle between the schools, a tradition that is coming to an end this year. It seems the “powers that be” would have more important things to do than to destroy years of tradition for small schools in small towns that they, themselves, have never set foot in. Not to mention the undue financial burden of replacing uniforms and team logos, not just in Gustine but in the other small communities in California that have had their traditions uprooted.
